Co-Presented by Gibney and JACK
Curated by Eva Yaa Asantewaa for Gibney’s New Voices: Spotlight series, and by JACK as part of Stacy Grossfield’s Images // Landscapes series

Chiron in Leo

As conversations of mental health and generational trauma become more widely discussed within Black communities, Chiron in Leo enters those conversations by showing the effects that white supremacy has had on the mental health of Black families, and how the traumas experienced in childhood have a lasting impact on adult life.

Informed by an astrological aspect in J. Bouey’s chart, Chiron in Leo brings about a healing of the inner child by addressing trauma and modeling healing practices that could benefit the witnesses. In Greek mythology, Chiron is known as the “wounded healer” and this mythos greatly informed the characterization and narrative of Chiron in this film. This work is largely informed by storytelling, particularly, the overwhelming and fragmented sensational experiences related to trauma through both the physicalization and vocalization of metamorphosing memories.

Your ticket purchase will give you access to a private link that will allow you to stream Chiron in Leo from Friday, May 28 at 9:00 am EDT through Sunday, May 29 at 11:59 pm EDT. Open Studios: For Black Folx, Curated by J. Bouey, with angel edwards, Jayson P. Smith, and Janae Williams/juh weems/fatblackclit

This Open Studios program is open for Black people only.

As a resource, we suggest reading this Everyday Feminism article about why Black-only spaces are needed and healthy in our current social and political climate.

This program will take place virtually, via Zoom.

TICKETS: $0 - $25, pay what you can

CPR 2021 Artist-in-Residence J. Bouey organizes a virtual Open Studios that gives a peek into the creative processes of angel edwards, Jayson P. Smith, and Janae Williams/juh weems/fatblackclit as they explore the ‘captive maternal’ (coined by Joy James), love and care during Black death, interrogating the ruptures that global anti-Blackness creates, and birthing self and others (obligatory and otherwise). The showings of each artists' work will be followed by a conversation with curator J. Bouey where they will share more about their creative processes, and what informs them.

Open Studios is a series of work-in-progress showings held regularly throughout the year, and serves as an incubator for new work, inviting the public into the artistic process. Each installment is curated by an invited guest, usually someone close to the CPR family, and features a diverse group of artists, performance-makers, choreographers, and dancers. Each Open Studios culminates in a conversation with the artists and organizers, where audiences are invited and encouraged to share their feedback.

Closed captioning will be provided, and ASL interpretation may be provided, upon request, and with at least two weeks’ advance notice, by emailing remi@cprnyc.org.

Never Before Never Again Festival

NEVER BEFORE NEVER AGAIN  is dedicated to improvisation. Our goal is to bring together improvisation-based performance artists, to cross-pollinate communities, and to highlight the varied possibilities and styles of improvisation. The artists presented chase the surprises and invitations that come along with improvising for an audience and approach performance as an experiment rather than a predetermined idea.

NEVER BEFORE NEVER NEVER AGAIN also offers a variety of workshops hosted by our Festival Artists. The workshops are designed to expand our investigation and understanding of improvisational forms. Workshops are open to ALL movers, shakers, and magic makers and will take place in Triskelion Arts' Muriel Schulman Theater.

Chiron in Leo (an excerpt)

  • 150 1st Avenue New York, NY, 10009 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

In collaboration with DJ TearDrop, 2018-2019 Queer|Art|Mentorship Fellow, J. Bouey, will present an excerpt of a new work, entitled Chiron in Leo, hosted by Movement Research at their 9th St Studio (CC122). In Greek mythology, Chiron is known as the ‘wounded healer.” Informed by an astrological aspect in their chart, Chiron in Leo is a performance addressing trauma and healing through storytelling and movement-based ritual. Bouey writes, “My artistic practice is most concerned with addressing systems of oppression through a lens of healing centered around the body and movement.” Working within a space of care (for themselves as an artist and dancer, and for the audience as witnesses), Chiron in Leo brings together storytelling and dance to transform past traumas into new revelations of possibility. The finished work will receive its world premiere at JACK in Brooklyn, Spring 2020.

Performance followed by discussion and Q+A with J. Bouey and their Mentor, David Thomson.
